Quote of the Day

“Nobody talks about entrepreneurship as survival, but that’s exactly what it is and what nurtures creative thinking. Running that first shop taught me business is not financial science; it’s about trading: buying and selling”
~Anita Roddick

Today’s Tip

Last week, while rushing to catch the subway, I passed by a coffee shop I’d never noticed before. It wasn’t new—peeling paint on the sign said otherwise—but something about the handwritten chalkboard outside caught my eye. It read, “Need a moment to breathe? Come in.”

That day, I did.

Inside, the space was cozy but unassuming—no flashy displays, just the scent of freshly brewed coffee and a barista with a genuine smile. She asked how my day was going, and for once, I didn’t feel like it was a line from a script. I left with a latte and a lingering thought: How had I missed this place until now?

Later that evening, it hit me. The shop wasn’t failing to exist—it was failing to communicate. No clear branding, no social media presence (I checked), and no signs beyond that sidewalk chalkboard. It relied on chance encounters in a city where attention is currency.

And here’s the thing: their coffee? Fantastic. But great products don’t sell themselves.

That realization reminded me of some business owners I’ve met. They pour everything into their craft but hesitate to market it. They wait for customers to stumble upon them instead of lighting the path. A strong marketing strategy—a website, targeted ads, even a consistent social voice—doesn’t just attract attention; it makes that attention meaningful.

So, here’s my pitch to every business owner out there: Don’t let your product’s greatness get lost in the noise. Be that chalkboard, but bigger. Smarter. Strategically placed where the right people can see it—and stop to stay a while.

Trivia

Today’s Question: What donut-making chain is the center of attraction of many world-class store food courts in the UK?

Previous Question: Who, in 1879, was superintendent of the Battle Creek Sanitarium which practiced 'biologic living' and 'natural medicine’? He was a well-known surgeon, and in the 1890s he and his brother developed a dry wheat flake that would soon become a popular breakfast cereal.

Previous Answer: John Kellogg.

John's brother, Will, eventually took over the business. Charles Post was actually once a patient at Kellogg's sanitarium.
