Today’s Tip

I don’t scroll Instagram often. Not really my thing. But last weekend, curiosity got the better of me while waiting for my coffee to brew.

The usual parade of vacation photos and overly filtered meals filled my screen. Then, a post stopped me mid-scroll. A guy about my age, gray at the temples but sharp-looking, was holding a leather briefcase. Nothing fancy—just him, the bag, and a caption that read, “Finally found one that lasts. Worth every penny.”

I don’t even need a briefcase. But there I was, clicking his profile, then the brand’s tag, then their website.

That post wasn’t a polished ad. It wasn’t even from the company. It was from a guy who looked like someone I could grab a beer with, somehow, that made it more believable. More real.

Later, I thought about why that worked so well. The brand hadn’t told me they made great bags—this guy had. It was personal, and relatable.

This is the power of influencers—not the flashy, celebrity kind but the every day, credible ones. They don’t feel like marketing. They feel like someone you trust saying, “Hey, try this.” For businesses, it’s a way to reach people who might not respond to ads but trust a recommendation from someone like them.

So, if you’re a business owner, consider this: Find those voices your customers listen to. People who already align with your values and audience. Let them share your story in a way no billboard or algorithm can. Because sometimes, all it takes is one post to make someone—someone like me—stop scrolling.
